We all go through economical hardships sometime in our lives, or at least some of us do. When we need money to pay our bills, tend to our children, or eat we try anything possible to get a dollar. I have never gone to a corner of a busy road to ask for money so I can not say what that feels like or what are the reasons why people spend hours under the sun waiting for a few donations from passer-by's.
In this city there are men and women standing around in almost every corner trying to wipe your windows clean or asking for a donation with a cardboard message at hand. Usually we feel compassion and grab for the change we might have in our purse or around our automobile, but sometimes we do not have any spare change. Sometimes we never carry cash, and strictly use debit or credit cards. Sometimes we are struggling too that every quarter counts, especially when you make 10 stops a day at corners where people need or demand a donation.
If we make 10 stops a day and give a quarter at each stop, that is $2.50 a day times and lets suppose that we make those 10 stops a day for 30 day's every month, that is a total of $60 per month. Some of use need those $75 for food for our children, gas, or bills. I do not mean to be greedy, but it does happen some of us live check to check. Seventy-Five is way too much.
Either way my concern now is that sometimes I dread being the first one at a stop light because I do not want to be the first to get my window cleaned, because I only carry a credit card. I never carry cash. NEVER! I could make a small donation if they accepted credit cards. I also am currently unemployed, I have bills to pay which I have not paid. Well I have paid a few bills with money I had in my bank account and with my credit card, but now I owe major currency to the bank.
Well now in days these men are grouchy! I mean they ask for a donation and I smile and say "I do not have any money, sorry." After I provide my reason of why I can not donate spare change I get cursed at! They start saying all these things I rather not listen to. I am so glad when the light turns green so I can just move on with my life. I say to myself even if I had spare change now I will never even consider donating to this grouchy man(various grouchy men). Really, I mean when I worked I always tried to give my change whenever I saw someone in need back in the town where I used to live. Maybe these grouchy people vary from city to city because I had never seen that before.
On Monday, I went to the Fiesta Mart down the road and this man wanted to clean a couples SUV windshield, and they from afar seem to have said, "No", and this man turned red and started raising his hands in an aggressive manner and he seemed like he was arguing about something like he was really mad. The red light never seemed to change to green, once it did the couple where laughing. I guess because they where happy to move from that spot.
I feel that if you are going to the corners and ask or work for your money in those corners make sure that you understand that everyone has a reason for skip a day of donating their spare change. Sometimes we also have issues in our lives, sometimes we just do not have any change for valid reasons. Also many people do not carry cash for security reasons. Please do not make a fuss or get angry. It actually makes us uncomfortable to stop at a red light. It makes us at times feel like we are guilty of something or that we might fall victim of something caused by others anger.
Finding a job is hard, I know maybe these men and women are having trouble being employed or just need an extra dollar. It is also hard to find a job when appearance is important, even when we are a little or greatly overweight we have less possibilities of being employed (personal experience and future blog entry), but anger is inexcusable. I don't see why anyone should get angry. We need to bring peace to the cities intersections.
